AVIKA GOR Anandi of Balika Vadhu
AVIKA GOR, 11
Best known as: Anandi of Balika Vadhu, a primetime soap's perspective of child marriage. Avika is probably the most-interviewed child actor of recent times, her media-savvy responses a testimony to that. Stepping into large shoes: Avika's character, though bubbly, has seen it all at an age when most urban girls enter puberty. "Anandi has been married off, has stopped studying and one of her friends is already a widow. There are many scenes where I have to cry, but I act them out without glycerine!" she chuckles, adding "Initially, my character couldn't even manage her pallu, but she's learnt quickly, and so have I!" An ardent watcher of soaps such as Bidaai, Avika wants to "learn from Tulsi, Parvati… all the successful actors."
The 11-year-old's life is no less hectic than a Bollywood starlet. She has to juggle her morning school with shoots at a set far away from home. "I appeared for my unit test today," she says, "and I know I'm going to fare well – I study regularly between shots." This sixth-grader teaches dance at school and is been a hit in drama competitions. No wonder she has done away with glycerine. Side effects: It is safe to assume that Madame Gor is now worth lakhs, given that she's also doing films – her debut being Paathshala with Shahid Kapoor. Though the channel's authorities get defensive giving out details on her 'pocket money', her Maruti 800-driving father is now flaunting a Hyundai Accent. Other heartening side effect is the "so many friends in the media," she smiles.
