Director Anurag Kashyap says his next film Dev. D is the contemporized version of Sarat Chandra's famous novel 'Devdas'.
We have seen Sanjay Leela Bhansali's almost literal adaptation of the story in Devdaas . Sudhir Mishra is giving it a political twist with Aur Devdas . But Anurag Kashyap, who has directed dark thrillers like Black Friday and No Smoking , is basing his adaptation on the modern-day youth.
Speaking to a news agency, Kashyap says he got the film's idea from Abhay Deol , who also plays Devdas in the film.
"Abhay narrated a story to me regarding a man in London and suggested making a modern take on 'Devdas'. That thing hit me very hard. I got interested in the subject and hence 'Dev D' was born. I then scripted the film on the basis of news headlines on the Gen X because I wanted to take the angle of today's youth in the film," the director is quoted by IANS.
Interestingly, Anurag has roped in two newcomers to play the roles of Paro and Chandramukhi.
"I decided that Mahi Gill will be Paro when I saw her at a party. I later went on to see her work in some Punjabi films…I had to delay the film because I wasn't able to find someone appropriate to do Chandramukhi's role. It is a complex and complicated character. My hunt ended when I auditioned Kalki Koechlin who was one of the last girls to be auditioned," he said.
Kashyap adds that Abhay was his obvious choice to play the protagonist.
Shot in Manali, Chandigarh, Delhi and London, 'Dev D' is set for release in February next year.
