If you’re expecting a nudge-nudge pun on the ‘Zzzzz’ in KARZzzz, you’re pretty much mistaken – this Bollywood film is so ludicrous and unintentionally hilarious, it turns out to be quite entertaining.
Karan Arjun…Om Shanti Om… now KARZZZ brings back the age old formula of Punarjanm (for the Bollywood challenged, that means ‘previous life’). Himesh Reshammiya get back on the big screens a year after his hugely successful debut movie ‘Aap ka Suroor’. But this time the cap is gone, and there is fancy new hair.
Although I can’t say that the script is as smooth and silky as Himesh’s hair, the actor/singer does manage to entertain the audience with his door knob acting and nasal singing.
KARZZZ is the story of reincarnation. Himesh Reshamiya is a very popular Rock Star in South Africa (don’t ask). One day he meets Tine (Shweta Kumar) at a post concert party and instantly falls in love with her. A few days later Himesh sings a tune at a concert and suddenly a splitting headache like Voldemort traumatizing Harry Potter hits him. There are flashes of light, strange visions of a mansion and a pretty girl. Himesh collapses and the audience screams.
It turns out that the mansion was once owned by Dino Morea who had died in a car accident years ago. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to realize that Himesh was Dino Morea in his past life. Incidentally, Dino was married to Urmila Matondkar. Dino was killed by his wife Urmila with the help of Gulshan Grover for money and property.
Twist of fate – Shweta (who Himesh has the hots for) turns out to be the foster daughter of Urmila. The following things follw in the movie - love…vengenace…betrayal…revenge… a lot of songs.
Had the movie a few less songs, the movie would have been a cult hit, but it is entertaining nevertheless. A few of the scenes ar truly hilarious, Himesh looks like Shweta’s dad throughout the film… Dino Morea’s mom, Rohini Hattangadi instantly recognizing Himesh as her reincarnated son (Dino wouldn’t be happy to know that he resembles Himesh)… Himesh running like an Olympian athlete after being hit by a bullet in his leg… Himesh and Shweta being lovey-dovey… the funniest scene is the one where Himesh tells Shweta that he is a reincarnated Dino.
Coming to the characters. Himesh is his wannabe self, trying to be as much as a cool dude as possible. He tries really hard to get into his character but is left in shambles. His hairdo takes the focus off his expressions though. Watching Himesh playing a Rock Star in South Africa is not to be missed by anyone.
Urmila MAondkar is great as the scheming, evil witch. Though the director forgot to add aging makeup on her when she makes her entry 25 years after she kills Dino. Shweta is good to look at but she needs to go back to acting classes. She would’ve been happier had she been paired with Dino Morea playing the reincarnated Himesh.
The supporting characters including Gulshan Grover, Raj Babbar, Asrani and Himani Shivpuri are criminally wasted. Danny Denzongpa is awesome as the Bollywood fim buff, mouthing dialogues from famous Hindi films. Dino Morea would’ve been happier had he played a reincarnated Himesh.
Director Satish Kaushik uses all his seeds of his remaking skills and doles up a movie that has more masala than a Tandoori Chicken in a remote village of Kolhapur. The music is a bit of a downer since there are too many songs that bore. The title track is very watchable and hummable though. The cinematography is excellent.
Don’t bother comparing this film to the original ‘Karz’. KARZzz is a hot dish of sizzling masala served in a huge platter. Watch it if you’re looking for a few laughs at Himesh’s expense. If you’re a hair stylist, you might learn a thing or two too.
