Amrita Rao Sheds Her Touch Me Not Image To Doing Kissing and Bold Scenes
Amrita Rao trod the path to Bollywood as most model turned actresses do, but unlike most of them she made her presence felt, earning a Filmfare nomination in the Best Female Debut category for her second film “Ishq Vishq”. After her innocent and chirpy look in “Main Hoon Na” and quintessential virgin beauty in Vivah, Amrita is all set to shed her touch me not image in Shyam Benegal’s period satire, Welcome To Sajjanpur.
She will be seen doing some intense scenes with co-star Shreyas Talpade. Amrita says, :I play a typical village girl, while he plays the letter writer of the village”. Interestingly, Amrita has mostly done romantic movies so far but she has never kissed on screen.
Amrita clarifies, :I do not believe in the popular dialogue, I will kiss if the script demands it or something like that. For me, my level of comfort is the prime factor. I would never compromise on my comfort, no matter how much a script needs it. At the same time, I am not averse to kissing and bold scene. As long as I am fine with it, I can do anything”. Talking about director Shyam Benegal, she says, “He is one of the fantastic filmmakers India has ever produced. Welcome….was a challenging role for me. Be it the look or the dialect, every bit of it was new and exciting for me”.
Amrita did her homework well before taking on the project. She states, “First and foremost I wanted to understand Shyam Banegal’s style. I got the DVDs of all his movies, and watched them in a row. Once I found myself ready, I started shooting”. She says she gave it her best shot, because this is the movie that puts her in the same bracket as actresses like the late Smita Patil, Rekha and Shabana Azmi.
The gorgeous actress adds, “He (Benegal) is a very quick person. He does not waste his own time, nor that of his cast. He knows what he wants out of his actors, and he also knows how to extract it”.
Apart from Welcome To Sajjanpur Amrita will next seen in Shortcut, playing an ultra glamorous girl. She says thoughtfully, “It would be completely different from whatever I have left behind in the past”. Amrita attributes her success to the choices she made while selecting her projects and also her love for her work.
Amrita says, “When it comes to audience’s choice, each movie counts. Moreover, it is important to enjoy the work that I do. Thus, it is important that I am excited about the movie I sign”. With the perfect next door look, Amrita Rao has proved that she is much more than that. The actress who was first noticed in Ishq Vishq, is now ready to work with Shyam Benegal!
So, how did it feel working with the maestro? The glam beauty says, “I have grown up watching his movies and Zubeidaa is my most favourite movie. I feel fortunate to work not only with him, but an actor like Shreyas Talpade too, who is also a part of the film. It was a melange of brilliant people who know what they are doing. When I saw Iqbal, I had tears in my eyes. It was just a perfect blend”.
Incidentally, Amrita plays a village belle in the movie. Talking about the character, she says, “This is the first time I am playing such a rustic character. My character, Kamla, is a potter and is uneducated. It is a costume drama and we also had to adapt to the Bagilkhandi accent. I am very excited about the project”.
The stunning actress has been on an experimenting spree and the recent changes was quite visible in Heyy Babyy, where she was part of a track. So, any further plans of experimenting with her new look? She says, “Well, an actor is remembered more for his/her last performance, and mine was Viva, so it will take a little time to shed that image. But, I am getting there. I would love to do an out and out action movie. I have done an action sequence in one of my flicks which had a typical Matrix like sequence, and I would love to do something like that again”.
Looks like Amrita is definitely gunning for an image makeover with two very different looks in her upcoming movies, Victory with Harman Baweja and Shortcut.
