The hunt for Mrs Rahul Mahajan has begun in all earnest. The son of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan will replace Rakhi Sawant on NDTV Imagine's Swayamvar Season - 2.
Announcing the new show Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jaayega (RDLJ) at a glittering function in Delhi today, Sameer Nair CEO, NDTV Imagine had this to say: "Its back by popular demand! We're really pleased with the spectacular response to Season 1 of the Swayamvar with Rakhi. What began as idle voyeurism quickly changed into genuine interest and a strong desire for Rakhi to find the right man with whom she could share her life. There was a perceptible change in audience's perception of Rakhi during the duration of the show. Buoyed by the acceptance, connect and success of the concept, Imagine is pleased to announce the launch of Swayamvar Season 2 with Rahul Mahajan. The show has in many ways become a fulfiller of dreams and we hope to do the same with Rahul, helping him to find his ideal Dulhan. He is someone who already has a connect with the audience at large and we are confident that it will only grow as we proceed!"
The search for Rahul's ideal life partner will start with a nationwide audition process. A call for entries will be followed by multi-city meetings and interviews with shortlisted participants.
Rahul, 34, is excited at the prospect of finding a bride on national television. "A lot has happened with me in the last three years. Today is the start of a new chapter of my life a new beginning. I have decided to choose my life partner on Imagine. I truly appreciated the way the sensitivity and seriousness in which Imagine handled Rakhi's Swayamvar, while still maintaining the elements of entertainment for the TV audience. I'm really looking forward to finding my life partner who I will spend the rest of my life with!" he said.
If Rakhi Ka Swayamvar had 28 million viewers across the country glued to their TV screens in the first week itself, Mahajan as the would-be-groom should prove no less interesting.
He of course hit the headlines in rather tragic circumstances with the violent death of his father. Since then Mahajan has been in the limelight for one reason or the other.
In 2006 he married his sweetheart of 13 years Shweta Singh, but that relationship ended in a divorce just two years later. Mahajan made his foray into television with Bigg Boss 2 where his proximity to female co-stars, especially Payal Rohatgi and Monica Bedi, kept the rumour mills busy.
In response to a question if he would welcome Bigg Boss co-star Monica Bedi on the show, Rahul said as far as he was concerned any girl of marriageable age and of good family values had an equal chance of becoming Mrs Mahajan.
Neatly side-stepping a question about his predecessor on the show Rakhi Sawant, Rahul refused to comment on her relationship with Elesh Parujanwala. Instead, he reiterated his own intentions to find a bride through RDLJ.
Rahul scoffed at suggestions that he had already 'selected a life partner'. According to him, there was at present no woman in his life and that is why he had chosen to go the swayamvar route to find a suitable bride.
Rahul said that the idea for the show had been sparked off when he appeared as a participant on the popular NDTV show Big Fight, talking on the subject of swayamvars.
Taking a dig at the media, Rahul admitted that his life was already in the public domain, whether he wanted it or not. At least by getting married through RDLJ he stood to make some money, Rahul joked.
Swayamvar Season 2 while following a similar format as its predecessor will have a complete unique spin.
In season 1, 16 men wooed Rakhi Sawant. However it remains to be seen if this time around it will be the ladies wooing Rahul or Rahul going all out to impress the 16 contenders on the show.
The prospective brides will be brought together under one roof and will be put through a series of tasks and challenges to uncover the various facets of their personality and beliefs and ascertain their compatibility with Rahul, assisting him in arriving at his final decision.
Along the way, his friends and family will join him, helping him in his quest to find the ideal life partner.
