Despite Grandmom’s Death Ranbir Shoots A Music Video For Rocket Singh
By Subhash K Jha
Ranbir Kapoor was in no mood to dance this week after his grandmother’s death. The young actor was very close to his mom’s mom who lived in Ranbir house, and in fact in a room right opposite his, and was constantly in and out of her favorite grandson’s space.
The death in the family hit Ranbir hard. But the very next day he was dancing to Ahmed Khan’s choreography at Yashraj Films for a special last-minute song in the song less- Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year.
This week for three days from Tuesday to Thursday Yashraj Studios was abuzz with excitement as Ranbir Kapoor shook a leg or two to Ahmed Khan’s tune.
The song has apparently been added on to Shimit Amin’s Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year, much to the choreographer’s surprise.
The film was meant to be song less. So what brought on this sudden spurt of music into this gritty real and savagely satirical film about a young Sardarji going through a bad-hair day?
Says Ahmed; “Even I was surprised when Aditya Chopra approached me for a song in Rocket Singh. Then I heard the track by Salim-Suleiman and I was blown. It’s a sure-shot hit,” says the young choreographer riding high on the waves of the Dan ta Nan track from Kaminey.
Ahmed says he has forged another durable star-choreographer bond with Ranbir after Shahid. “Rocket Singh is my third film with Ranbir after Bachna Ae Haseeno and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. We’ve an almost instinctive understanding of what Ranbir’s body language is and how it can be used.”
This would be the second item number with a Sikh hero after Singh Is Kinng. But Ahmed is sure it is different. “This is a young cute Sardarji having a blast on the dance floor. It’s unlike anything anyone has ever seen. We had to take cancel on Tuesday because Ranbir’s Naani passed away. But we managed in two days.”
The song was apparently Aditya Chopra’s and not director Shimit Amin’s idea.
Says Ahmed, “I’ve a 5-film deal with Yashraj, and so I am at their beck and call. And if it’s song for Ranbir, then it’s even more fun.”
