Movie Review - Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

Movie Review - Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Review by Anthony Morris

Judging the quality of an individual installment of the Harry Potter saga is fiddly work.

Unlike pretty much every other kind of movie out there, which can be anything from amazingly good to utterly crap, the Harry Potter series to date have all fallen within a pretty narrow band of quality.

The bad ones are still pretty good, the good ones aren't really astoundingly great and this one - the sixth in the series - is mostly good with the occasional flash of great.

Not surprisingly, the good mostly comes from the fact that this is the sixth film, and so we already both like the characters and want to see what happens next.

What is surprising is that while there are various evil deeds afoot and everything is at stake and the dark past of Voldemort, AKA Tom Riddle is delved into, what's more interesting is the romantic fumblings involving the teen aged (well, they are playing teenagers) trio at the centre of the series.

Will Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) finally get it together with Ginney Weasley (Bonnie Wright), sister of his best mate Ron (Rupert Grint) - and will Ron figure out that Hermonie (Emma Watson) has a massive crush on him?

Much clumsy teen love and snogging follows, making this both the most grown-up and in some ways the most fun of the series to date.

Meanwhile the maybe evil, maybe conflicted Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) has a job to do that might just involve killing off Harry Potter, and everyone else is fairly worried about the seemingly unstoppable rise of Voldemort's evil, even if Voldemort himself seems to be keeping a very low profile.

There is enough hints of the fun magic (not to mention a Quidditch match) of earlier films to keep the faith with the earlier installments in the series. But this is undoubtedly a darker film than what we've already seen, and a very creepy sequence set in a shoreline cave will give pretty much anyone of any age nightmares.

But there is still two films to go (the last book being split into two films), so while this moves things forward we are still a long, long way from wrapping things up.

If you have enjoyed the Harry Potter series until now, you will have no complaints here; if you haven't, it's been good enough for long enough that you don't really have any excuse.
