Seventeen-year-old Dipika Pallikal, who is the top seed in the women's individual event at the 16th junior World squash championship being held in Chennai from July 28, 2009, is widely tipped to be the first Indian ever to win a World Championship.Joshna Chinnappa had made it to the final in 2005 at Herentals, Belgium, before losing to Egypt's Raneem El Weleily in three well-contested games.
Born and raised in Chennai, Dipika is already ranked inside the women's world's top 50 (No. 48) and has enjoyed a significant junior career, winning the British Junior U-17 Open title in 2008 and reaching the final in both the British Junior U-19 Open and Asian Junior Championship earlier this year.
She played her first international tournament in London when she was in her sixth grade, and till date, Dipika has won the German Open, Dutch Open, French Open, Australian Open, Scottish Open on the European Junior Squash Circuit.
Dipika trains at the ICL-TNSRA Academy at Chennai under Cyrus Poncha and Major (rtd) S. Maniam. She has played three times for the country in the seniors tournaments and six in the juniors.
According to the WISPA website, Dipika's ambition is to be ranked world number 1, while her hobbies include listening to music and surfing the Internet.
Dipika, who is as popular for her looks as for her achievements so far on the squash courts, has been given offers to star in Tamil movies, but has refused them for the moment as she wants to focus on squash.
