Colombo: Sri Lankan army's mission to kill V Prabhakaran and wipe off LTTE looks accomplished after the forces confirmed that Tamil Tigers chief was killed, said sources.

According to the Lankan military sources, body of LTTE chief Prabhakaran was found in the war zone. Prabhakaran, 54, who founded the LTTE in 1976 and built it brick by brick as one of the deadliest insurgent groups, was killed in the coastal belt of Mullaitivu district, around 395 km northeast of Colombo, confirmed army sources.

Tamil Tiger supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran was shot dead by Sri Lankan special forces as he tried to stage a dramatic breakout from the army encirclement, a military spokesman said.

Prabhakaran and his top aides came out of their last hiding place in a small convoy of van and an ambulance and tried to drive out of the war zone, but were gunned down, he said.

However, the army withheld an official announcement till DNA test of the bodies was conducted.

The Tiger chief was killed with two others, who are yet to be identified but believed to be his closest associates LTTE intelligence chief Pottu Amman and Sea Tigers' chief Soosoi.

Earlier, the body of LTTE Chief V Prabhakaran's son was found from war zone.

According to the sources, Sri Lankan army has found the body of Charles Anthony, who was the head of Information and Technology department of LTTE.

The army also claimed that the bodies of LTTE political head B Nadesan and LTTE peace secretariat chief Pulidevan have also been found.

The Sri Lankan army claims it to be one of the major achievements and the personnel have started celebrating.

Sri Lankan's Tamil Tigers called off their quarter-century long armed struggle as the speculation gripped that the elusive V Prabhakaran is dead.

Prabhakaran: The man behind LTTE

Velupillai Prabhakaran or Thambi as he was informally known as, was the man who led to sleepless nights for the Sri Lankan army. Prabhakaran was one of the most wanted people by the Interpol for murder, organised crime and terrorism conspiracy.

Prabhakaran was the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a rebel organization that seeks an independent Tamil state in part of the territory of Sri Lanka.

Prabhakaran declared his ideology to be driven by 'Revolutionary socialism and the creation of an egalitarian society'.

He joined the Tamil nationalist movement in his youth and quickly established himself as a strong willed militant leader by founding LTTE. His rare interviews, his annual Tamil Eelam Heroes Day speeches, and the policies and actions of the LTTE can be taken as indicators of Prabhakaran's philosophy and ideology.

Religion did not play a prominent part in his philosophy or ideology, but there the LTTE was characterized as anti-Buddhist. The LTTE were driven only by the idea of Sri Lankan Tamil nationalism and considers it as the only single-minded approach and inspiration towards the attainment of an independent Tamil Eelam.

Not much is known about Prabhakaran's personal life. The only source for some information have been his interviews or cited media sources. It is widely known that he was married to Mathivathani Erambu. Their marriage was held in Tirupporur, near Chennai on 1 October 1984. They have a daughter named Duwaraka, a son named Charles Anthony (after one of his most trusted associates, Charles Lucas Anthony, alias Seelan, who was killed in 1983) and another son named Balachandran.

Their whereabouts are not known, but it is widely speculated that they are not in Sri Lanka.

Velupillai Prabhakaran studied up to G.C.E. Ordinary level (Grade 10) at Chidampara College. Prabhakaran was also known to suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, and TIAs.

Prabhakaran interacted with the media in his first and only press conference that was held in Killinochchi on 10 April 2002. It was reported that more than 200 journalists from the local and foreign media attended this event, and they had to go through a 10-hour security screening before the event. Prabhakaran disclosed that he has instructed the LTTE cadres to kill him if he compromised on the goal of independent state.

Prabhakaran was the man behind assassination of Indian leader Rajiv Gandhi. He called it a "tragic incident" and requests the press "not to dig into an incident that happened years ago".

Velupillai Prabhakaran was wanted by Interpol and many other organizations since 1991 for terrorism, murder, organized crime and terrorism conspiracy. He has been issued a death warrant by the Madras High Court in India for plotting the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in May, 1991 and in 2002 Judge Ambepitiya issued an open warrant to arrest him in connection with the 1996 Central Bank Bombing. The judge found him guilty on 51 counts and sentenced him to 200 years in prison.
