Mee Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy

Mee Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy

Mee copy kartoy?

Is Santosh Manjrekar's film, Mee Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy, a copy of Lage Raho Munnabhai?

Santosh Manjrekar's film Mee Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy has caused a flutter in the industry. He has taken on a film that has Shivaji Maharaj, the most revered hero in the history of the State, as the central character.

All of Bollywood is tight-lipped about Marathi cinema's most ambitious film actually being a copy of Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Lage Raho Munnabhai.

Said a trade source, "Only instead of Mahatma Gandhi, who appears in Lage Raho Munnabhai as the voice of reason, in the case of Mee Shivaji Raje Bhosle…, Maharashtra's most revered political hero Shivaji appears in this film as the conscience awakener."

Santosh Manjrekar, a cousin of filmmaker-turned-actor Mahesh Manjrekar, who has directed Mee Shivaji Raje… candidly admitted that his film is inspired by Lage Raho Munnabhai, "but, it is not a copy of Lage Raho Munnabhai.  It just voices a similar thought."

He admitted that Shivaji's character (played by Mahesh Manjrekar) does appear every time his protagonist, Sachin Khedekar (who plays the common Marathi manoos) has doubts in his mind about this whole situation currently prevailing in Maharashtra.

Said Manjrekar, "My common man (or as you choose to call him Munnabhai) keeps wondering why in his own state he is the only one who has made no progress, while the immigrants from all over the country have come here and prospered."

It may be recalled that Udhav Thackeray was the chief guest at the mahurat of the film; and Raj Thackeray released the music at an event held at Shivaji Park, two weeks ago. When asked if the film has any political party's involvement, Manjrekar said, "I have the blessings of Shivaji Maharaj; therefore I have the proxy blessings of every Maharashtrian; and every well-wisher of Maharashtra. There is no political agenda and my film is more a social comment."

A still from Lage Raho Munnabhai

He also felt that there was no question of any copyright infringement between Lage Raho… and his film because "only the thought is similar."

"In fact there is no Circuit character," he laughed.  "Instead there is a supporting, somewhat comic character; Mawala (played by Makrand Anaspure) that appears with Shivaji Maharaj; but my common man is a loner with a lot of dilemmas.  So you see there are no direct similarities between Lage Raho… and Mee Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy."

When we asked Vidhu Vinod Chopra on whether he was aware of the similarities between the Marathi film Mee Shivaji Raje… and his own Lage Raho…, the filmmaker offered a 'no comments' stand.

  1. FILM ""MEE SHIVAJIRAJE BHOSALE BOLTOYE.'' ANGST OF THE SUBDUED INDIAN ANYWHERE

I saw the marathi movie ''Me Shivaji Raje Boltoye--himmat asel tar adawa''=I am Shivaji Raje speaking -Stop me if you can''.I was thrilled by each dialogue written by team of Mahesh Manjrekar and well enacted within a tight gripping script depicting an angst within each Mumbai kar each mahrashtrian each INDIAN today. The rise of a subdued much insulted poor 'Bhosale' the central charachter ,into a true responder of situations and leader of men is shown guided by ''wisdom of the past'' -SHIVAJI's heroics -a la 'Gandhi giri' of different form.
Then I was flummoxxed by this rise within me of a surge of ''regionalism ,hyper communalism or falsely inflated egotism of me being a marathi '' v/s pure utopian pan Indian nationalism which exists in many forms within ALL of us Indians of all hues and color.
Am I as a marathi and my tribe being wrong somewhere by this clench fisting and beating the left side chest with a right club of the hand as we shout --''We are Proud to be a Marathi anywhere in the world- India but especially within ''OUR'' MUmbai -maharashtra !!''??
What are the factors which seemingly keep us marathis and all of us BEHIND and then suffer from such complexes and angst??
I found out the following thoughts arose within me today as I continue to enjoy the rekindling of a spirit of being a Marathi Manoos. The feeling of pride inspiring some action was rising within me and my types..
Should I sheepishly defend this in front of my pan Indian identity within my own larger Indian friends around me and in touch with me at many forums and sites.??

1.Marathi manoos today is at the bottom of the pile atleast he /she feels like that within Mumbai where the only best and 'ANY HOW GO UP TYPE '-go getters in each field would rise crushing all THE others not only a marathi!
He/ she should learn WHICH DIRECTION TO TAKE,HOW ,WHEN AND where to ACT,rise and shine, which positions to occupy, to affect the future of the gen next, .
How the educational facilties be open to merit not money -power and how local BMC/state officials at crucial places be helpful to truthful and be honest to the causes/ needs of the marathis and all Mumbaikars regardless.
How the acts of defence-offence and wise guiles of Shivaji (and all past learned leaders saints) would help them fight the evil whatever its size and reach..'Learn all that is good from all and use it to go ahead..'

The Film asks all the MAHARASHTRIANS OF ALL HUES, MOTHER TONGUE RELIGION TO Join hands now to drive all that is BAD within us and for us as Indians , that keeps THEM down and out AGAINST the RAW AND the SUBTLE USE OF POLITICAL AND MONEY POWER ..

I think the film has a larger message to ALL THE INDIANS VICTIMS OF ..EITHER.. the dark unlawful corners of UP- BIHAR or casteiest and filmy individualistic politics of Tamil nadu or 'RED' blinded true intellectual BENGAL.or Kerala anywhere ...(even in Pakistan...??)
IT ASKS THEM TO LOOK WITHIN, JOIN HANDS-network!!- TO FIND A SOLUTION IN A UTOPIAN DREAM taking a step at a time ATLEAST FOR A BETTER TOMMORROW...for gen next..
2.NOT all are at the bottom, so many Marathis are so confidently UP there mingling with the best India has to offer in each field.
3.The angst within the masses which the FILM successfully exploits and makes it rise is that those within and at the top are not projecting themselves as men/women of marathi origin as they seem to be 'ashamed' of that fact! That is what successful marathis have projected to the masses .That those who are UP do not help those climbing from below to come up..believing in sense of fairplay where there is none!!
The fact is many others always accuse marathis or any one from any state ..that 'They' would always be 'them' anywhere and start talking in the mother tongue wherever they meet!! what is wrong in that!!??
5.MY observation about us marathis are that ,we are very independent and even if education or socio economic status may vary each one are very proud self esteemed people .They think that it is the ideas and non dependence on any other one even a marathi, that counts ! NOT the amount of money one has managed to accumulate. The literature and religious texts ,gems from the saints ,culture and food are things which can be enjoyed without having lots of money..'' Veer Savarkar crooned to enter all marathi hearts from the shores of England ''..aai chi jhopdi pyari ...''= '' a hut of my mother is blissful than living in a palace in the other lands''..
6.Marathis feel that honesty and pride that goes with it,the integrity, is the greatest virtue, signified by SHIVAJI AND ALL past saints and some great men from the even immediate past GK GOKHALE ,TILAK,Agarkar.,Karve ,Ambedkar ...so many more..Also TODAY signified by Dabbawalas of Mumbai who achieved pinnacle of perfection in the service they chose or had to ..or Mumbai Police men like Umbale ji and many before him who like a ordinary sentinels of as a just and lawful society would pay with EVEN their lives to safe gaurd the perpetual pillars of a nation and a society..

NOT only ''Talk well ,NETWORK,PUSH PLOD or present themselves well'' as many with a great fluid tongue manage to do at many forums.. BUT SHOW THOUGHTFUL RIGHT ACTION AT THE RIGHT TIME WITH DRAWING OWN SELF INTERESTS FOR THE SAKE OF THE SOCIETY AT LARGE ...
7.''MAHA --GREAT....RASHTRA = NATION'' THE NAME OF THE STATE ...ITSELF STANDS AMONGST ALL THE STATES OF INDIA DEFEATING REGIONALISM BY ITS VERY MEANING !! WHO CAN ACCUSE MARATHIS OF THAT ,WHEN ALL INDIANS OF ALL HUES HAVE MADE IT ITS SAFE HOME AND EVEN RULE IT RISING HIGH ABOVE MARATHIS IN MANY FIELDS!!
8.Can you imagine ''outsiders'' after decades of their stays Ruling them in any form like an dozens of MLA -MPs in UP Tamil nadu Bengal...any state !!?? show me a single example!!Mumbai OR Maharshtra has so many from other states who want the pie here but do not allow to get others the same at their ''HOME TOWNS"" !! That is what they call their places of origin ..still ask Amitabh or any one you meet next time..
BUT the film in the end takes togather ..ALL from all over India and from all religions and differences togather ..IN THE REIGN OF SHIVAJI NO INJUSTICE WILL BE DONE FILM THUNDERS..BUT DADAGIRI OF ANY ONE COMMUNITY TO AFFECT LIFE AND STYLE CULTURE AND FUTURE OF MARATHIS DIRECTLY or safety of any indians WOULD NOW ONWARDS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED..IT SAYS..
LOUDLY AS THE AUDIENCE EVEN IN BARODA GUJARAT CLAPPS ....AS THE FILM IS RELEASED SIMULTANEOUSLY IN ALL PLACES WHERE MARATHIS HAVE RULED IN THE PAST AND HAVE MUCH POPULATION..
SEE THE FILM AS SOON AS YOU GET IT ANY HOW...AND RESPOND...in action..

  14. It is really shameful and irresponsible for the reporters now-a-days to write articles without even knowing the facts. I think looking down upon a particular community and thinking their own community is stronger, is such a disgraceful act. I really doubt Meena, whether you have watched the movie or even know about Shivaji Maharaj. You need to read about Shivaji Maharaj so that you do not have any preconceived ideas about him and Maharashtrians in general. I am proud to be a Maharashtrian and I dont consider myself less than any other Indian. I have nothing against non-maharashtrians in Mumbai. But I feel offended or attacked when such comments are passed on Mahrashtrians. Well I thank such people in a way, because you all provoke Maharashtrians to unite and strive for their pride. More you want to criticise, we'll come up with more strenghth and more such movies like these. I think you should understand the positions and situations of the community you always target to criticise and enjoy doing that. Well go and watch the movie..that will be your first lesson!!

  15. Meena,
Who is your trade source?? Please stop trading with him/her right away. I am sure you have relied on the views of trade source more than your own brain if you have watched the movie or i feel you havent seen the movie at all and relied on TRADE SOURCE. Go back to school and learn professionalism to earn your bread and livelihood. DONT MESS WITH MAHARASHTRIANS.

  18. first of all , in days of internet and blogs anbody can claim that they are journalist and critic , it does not mean anything , second of all
Vidu vinod chopra should not worry about copyy right infringnment cause , Munna bhai is a copy of
PATCH ADAMS then i guess hollywood should sue Bollywood just make it a blanket copyright infringment cause 95% of bollywood movies are copied for some other movies , even the so famed Sholay is a copy of magnificient Seven , so dont even go there

  19. Ive been a movie buff since the time I have seen the DDLJ genre. After watching this movie I have come to a conclusion as to why Marathi Cinema is in its infancy whereas bollywood has reached dizzying heights. The problem is simply this : marathi "cinema" is just a glorified "play". This film for example begins promisingly (shades of khosla ka ghosla here) but instead of keeping the script tight mr manjrekar chose to glorify the marathi manus using a flashback sequence ( the one where there are many statues around sachin). This particular scene reeks of "natak culture". Surely the directors have learnt to use the camera, script well. Wheareas its commendable to use the afzal khan killing as a poetry recitation its not funny to use the shivaji overkill. The idea is good folks but we have to learn to spread the message not shout it.

    Jai Maharashtra

  20. Well, Just a similiarity in Lagge Raho Munna bhai and Me Shivajiraje.... does not make later a copy of the former. Mi ShivajiRaje is by and large a totally different movie than Lage Raho.. The concept in the movie is totally true in the real life....The moral of the story is based on the way Honorable Shivaji Raje has run his kingdom. He was not only powerful, but was a very intelligent king. I would say The moral of the picture is about taking good points of the immigrants if we want to be like them, and at the same time immigrants should realise that if they want to live in Rome they need to like Romens. And this concepts holds true at any part of the world. The is not about whether you are a Maharashtrian or not, but it is about liking the culture and people of Maharashtra if you live in Maharashtra. When a sugar is put in the milk, we talk about solubility of sugar, not the milk. By the way Meena, you seem to be having more problem about the Me Shivajiraje... than the producer of Lage Raho...

  22. I thought this was a hash between "Lage Raho Munnabhai" and "Dombivli Fast", both of which were finer products. However, the effort should still be applauded for its cause and a strong message. Great work.
