Watch out for these young 'uns in 2009
• Farhan Akhtar
Now that Farhan Akhtar has tasted success as an actor he doesn't seem able to stop. In early 2009 he will be back as an actor in his sister Zoya Akhtar's Luck by Chance. Whether he will go back to directing the two films he had temporarily put on the back burner, the sequel to Don and Voice from the Sky, or some other script will catch his fancy as an actor is not clear yet. After dabbling in TV with his weekly show Oye! It's Friday, all that's really remaining for Farhan to do is endorsements which, we are sure, are happening, as you read this.
Farhan Akhtar, Imran Khan, Ranbir Kapoor |
• Imran Khan
He has gone on record to say that he loves being treated like a normal guy and works best under those circumstances. Well, his first film in the New Year will be Delhi Belly again for Aamir Khan Productions. Gratifyingly, the guy who could have got away playing lover boy for a few years more is now doing comedy too. For Soham Shah's Luck which will be his other release this year Imran has trained in cable work and built up his body to perform the adventure action he is doing in the film. Imran's character of a young boy who discovers himself through the course of the film should find resonance among the youth of today.
• Ranbir Kapoor
Ranbir Kapoor has been pencilled in by Shimit Amin for his next, after Chak De! India but before that he will be seen in debutant Ayaan Mukherjee's Wake Up Sid in which he plays a regular guy in love with a not too good looking and older girl Konkona Sen Sharma and Ajab Prem ki Ghajab Kahani opposite Katrina Kaif. Everyone who knows this fourth-generation Kapoor lad, and that includes all the film aunties who ruffled his hair as a kid, say he is the next big thing. Why, you might ask? A co-star who is a close friend of his describes him as being a combination of the three Khans i.e. he has the charm and charisma of Shah Rukh, the intelligence and planning of Aamir and the ability of a young Salman to be with more than one woman and make each of them feel special.
Asin, Sonam Kapoor, Genelia |
• Asin
The South brigade continues to march ahead, this time in the form of the sensuous Asin whose Ghajini has broken many box office records. She will next be seen opposite Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan in London Dreams. No doubt with the ever practical Aamir Khan advising her, she has shifted bag, baggage and parents to Mumbai and is now looking out for a cook who is an expert in Southern delicacies.
• Sonam Kapoor
Like father, like daughter. Sonam Kapoor like father Anil Kapoor is ultra choosy and has, after Saawariya, only signed and completed Delhi 6 which should release in the early part of 2009. Rumour keeps pairing her with her first co-star Ranbir Kapoor but that seems to be more wishful thinking than reality. It will be interesting to see what sort of films she opts to do next.
• Genelia D'Souza
'Kabhi kabhi Aditi' from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na continues to be a youth anthem but Genelia D'Souza has moved on and in 2009 will be seen in It's my Life in which she plays a Christian girl with a completely different set of values from the boy who falls in love with her, Harman Baweja, who hails from a Hindu joint family. But then films are all about loving your family and things get resolved in the end. Then there is Hook Ya Crook, a hard-hitting convict film in which she will be pitted opposite John Abraham and Uday Chopra to say nothing of M S Dhoni. David Dhawan directs.
WHAT WE SAW LAST TIME
• Akshay Kumar
Despite Akshay Kumar's action packed sequence in Tashan, it tanked big time. But then came Singh is Kinng and his buffoon act with the runaway chicken in Chandigarh as well as his don by default who was as down to earth as he was agile got the viewers cheering and chortling. That he got the cool Katrina Kaif to do a sexy dance with him among the pyramids only added to his star quotient.
• Katrina Kaif
Race and Singh is Kinng on the plus side far outweighed the negatives, Yuvvraaj and a special appearance in Hello. The very pretty Katrina Kaif who promises to move on from the girlfriend slot to doing roles of more substance danced and smiled her way into everyone's hearts.
• Hrithik Roshan
What can one possibly say about Hrithik Roshan. He has changed our collective perception of Akbar with his portrayal of the humane king who changed a marriage of convenience into one of love. Yes, Krazzy 4, a film from his father's company added nothing to his resume but we are still reeling from the sex appeal he exuded in Jodhaa Akbar.
• Aamir Khan
Acting, producing, directing… is there anything this man has not attempted and perfected. After Taare Zameen Par, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and Ghajini, Aamir is truly the most powerful man in Bollywood today. In addition to all this he has a fantastic street knowledge of marketing his films and his single mindedness towards whatever he does is something everyone can learn from.
