Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Movie type: Drama, RomanceMPAA rating: NRYear of release: 2008Run time: 167 minutesDirected by: Aditya ChopraCast: Anushka Sharma, Shah Rukh Khan, Vinay Pathak
Lets clarify a few things:
Taran Adarsh Movie Review of Rab Ne Bana di Jodi
* This is not a film based on a dancing competition as speculated by the media
* Shahrukh Khan is not seen in a double role
The film has soul and will leave you spellbound, panting and breathing for more as you leave the cinema hall. The repeat value is tremendous with many sterling moments of high emotions and drama.
…the audience is treated to dancing competitions, sum wrestling and a stunningly choreographed Tribute song on yesteryear stars Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna & Rishi Kapoor with guest appearances by 5 stunning bollywood actresses. SRK displays like no other that he is the King of all tribute songs!
The screenplay and story never let you down. The pace is perfect and the treatment to what is a simple story is crucially superb. Hats off Aditya Chopra for a sterling comebackPerformance wise, Vinay Pathak will sweep all the supporting actor awards next year with a sterling effort in grooming Surinder into Raj.
Anoushka Sharma could not have asked for a better debuting platform! Understatingly beautiful, she has excellent dialogue delivery and tremendous appeal for youngsters across India. Cheekly innocent, her comic timing and dancing capability will leave a memory in your minds as you leave the theatre. She will bag all the major debutant awards.
What can one say about SRK that has not been said in the past? His ability to carry Yashraj's problems singlehandedly is well noted, but this is his biggest moment where he rekindles the energy and flamboyancy of old and delivers what can only be described as his greatest performance ever. A challenging role - nearly a double role, it would be difficult to imagine any other actor essaying the diversity so effortlessly. In a word - UNFORGETTABLE! The way he emotes, the way he dances in his impish style, the way he smiles, his accent - everything is so unblemished and infectious that his legion of female fans will fall in love with him for the upteenth time.
First review on net frm Hanoz frm SRK.org, very minor spoilers
I wont deny it; I was very worried about how the movie would turn out to be. TRIED to keep low expectations after OSO, but failed. So I went with these massive expectations all worried and all thinking it might disappoint. What a relief it is to watch it and confidently say: It didn’t just meet my expectations, it surpassed it, and by what a difference! They DID it, Aditya Chopra and SRK DID IT!(atleast for me) I don’t know about you guys but since the past few years I was really happy with the kind of cinema SRK was doing. Loved Swades, Paheli, Chak De India, Don…all of those. But at the back of my head I was just waiting for one of those Shahrukh Khan movies that carried for me the kind of effect movies such as DDLJ, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mohabbatein had on me. High on emotional quotient with a number of spectacular scenes, quotes, songs and just the sheer overall grandeur. As much as I liked his recent films minus OSO and KANK, I was waiting for something like Rab Ne to come along. And it was just perfect because it was everything that I wanted it to be. No unnecessary extra characters, no fake looking unreal sets, no overdose of actors talking in English (whats up with that in hindi films these days?), no lackluster editing with unnecessary slow motion and fast motion, and most importantly no corny jokes to which I slap my head. And it was just such a good experience re-living one of those kind of films.
I don’t think I can explain the story any better than SRK already has. It’s a very simple story about an ordinary man trying to live an ordinary life, but his life takes a solid turn once he meets Taani. I don’t want to reveal anything more because the movie unfolds in a beautiful manner. People will like the movie a lot more if they stay away from spoilers so that they don’t expect what’s to come. That’s one of the greatest traits about the movie, the pace and sequence in which the movie proceeds.
Even though the movie was literally set within one town it never got boring. The set design was wonderful. The tone of the film and the colors perfectly fit the mood of the film. Props to the DI Colorist and the Cinematographer. Special mention for the the look of Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte…they fit so much within the 6 minutes of the song. However for me, overall, the picturization of Dancing Jodi stood out. You’ll see why when you watch the film. The editing was just perfect, and the song will give you goosebumps guanarteed. Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai was also beautifully filmed around some beautiful places in Amritsar. I never really liked Dance Pe Chance a lot, but watching it in the film I thought otherwise. Anushka is a great dancer and she looks amazing in the song. Haule Haule was one of my favorite songs technically. It will put a smile on your face for sure.
Getting to the performances, it’s funny how with every movie of SRK’s, he ends up with “one of his best performances ever”. Just saying that isn’t saying anything new anymore, it’s a given. But it’s just surprising to see how this guy can continually prove the same time and again. As boring as the statement may have gotten, it’s true. Now some might think that it’s mainly going to be the Surinder Sahni performance that gets him all the good reviews. As correct as that may be, you cannot overlook his performance as Raj either, as much as we’ve seen him play it before. His balance between the two characters is what will astonish you. Some people had said before that it’s ridiculous that Anushka can’t recognize between her husband and Raj. But when you watch the performance, when you look at the 2 different get ups in detail and when you see how differently he acts as both, Suri and Raj, you’ll be lying to yourself if you say that you could still say they’re both the same person. Look at both of them minus SRK. Forget that he’s SRK and imagine if you saw those two guys without really knowing who the person really is, and you will see that it’s very much believable. SRK antics as Surinder are so good I got no words, especially during the first half of the movie. You will laugh even when there’s no comedy just by looking at him and watching him react to things and people around him. For example (minor spoiler ahead), the laptop scene with the flash drive around his neck. Truly a great performance. He’s outright hilarious and heartbreakingly sad at the same time. And what makes it so sad and funny at the same time is how real the character is. His emotional scenes as Raj in the second half will also blow you away, especially the pre-climax scenes. I don’t think I can say much more about his performance that you guys don’t know. One thing is for sure, the movie would fall flat on it’s face if it wasn’t for SRK and Aditya Chopra. Because when you watch the film, sometimes you do think “that’s a little far fetched”, or “hmm…would a real person would have reacted like that?”
It’s the unfolding of the story, the handling of performances and the likeability factor that make this film work in a big way. I’m sure it must have been a very delicate task to pull off, but hats off to Adi for doing it. If I would have just read the script or known the entire story without watching the movie, the story would have been a little hard for me to believe. But I guess that’s what these guys are best at, bringing something fresh to the table and making it believable with their respective talent. The movie is nowhere near the scale of DDLJ or Mohabbatein, so please don’t go expecting something that big. It’s very clear after watching the film that they did not want anything that big. It’s a short, sweet and simple movie with tons of likeability factor. And SRK was right, you will walk out with a smile on your face. The end credits will also lend a hand in doing that. Each and every person in the cinema sat and watched it till the very last credit pulled up.Anushka Sharma looked very pretty and even acted very well. There’s not much to say about her apart from that. She dances really well and compliments SRK’s performance to the max, especially during the second half. Vinay Pathak was pretty funny and Suri’s best friend. The women in Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte looked beautiful, but Rani Mukherji stood out. WOW! She looked great. Also I’m not sure if others knew about this, but I didn’t and it was a pleasant surprise seeing (possible spoiler) Kajol make an appearance in the song as well. The audience was whistling and clapping when she came on. It was a great moment.
Another thing that I also loved were the many references given to DDLJ. There were so many! Some were obvious while many others were subtle. The very first scene of SRK and Anushka for example. I wont say what it is, but as soon as I saw it I was reminded of DDLJ. There are quite a few moments like such during the film. It was a nice touch.
Just go and watch the film. It’s upto you whether you want to go with expectations or not. But in the end I don’t think it will matter, because you most probably will end up loving the movie. It’s got a lot of soul and feels very real. Many will be able to relate to the movie when they walk out and look at the film in totality. But the message was simple and it was put across in a beautiful manner that lasts for 2 hours and 40 something minutes. I absolutely loved it.
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is not a small film after all. Though there were talks till date that Yash Raj Films and Shahrukh Khan have come up with their smallest film ever, both in terms of scale and duration (there were even murmurs around the film's length being a multiplex friendly 2 hours), that is far from true.
Though the scale at which the film is set would be visible once Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi releases this Friday (we certainly aren't talking about a Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham or an Om Shanti Om here since both were massive in look), it has been revealed that the film belongs to the old world school of near three hours duration, hence packing in quite a lot for all who wish to see Shahrukh Khan for the longest duration on the big screen. The exact length of the film is in the vicinity of 2 hrs. and 45 minutes.
"Yes, the film is close to the duration you suggest though it could be a couple of minutes here or there", confirms Monica Bhattacharya, spokesperson of Yash Raj Films, "The film's playing time is less than 3 hours for sure though."
This would still be less than Shahrukh Khan's longest movie with Yash Raj Films in recent times, Veer Zaara, which lasted close to 190 minutes. Even Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Swades crossed the 180 minutes milestone though Don was 170 minutes long, Om Shanti Om spanned 160 minutes, Chak De India stood at 150 minutes long with Paheli being his shortest in recent times at only 140 minutes.

ReplyDeleteBEST MOVIE of 2008,
outstanding performance By SRK
Rab Ne is the best movie of the year so far. Its no DDLJ I accept but again no film in last 10 years can be compared to DDLJ. Movie is great and I would recommend it to everyone. Its better than OSO which was pretty good movie itself.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post. Thanks for all the work you've done on this post :-) I must see this movie.
ReplyDeleteAnd I too always look forward to SRK, no matter what he's up to!

plzzz any one from here can giv me a good website to watch online rab ne banadi jodi??????
ReplyDeletePlease do not watch it online we have to support to make this film a blockbuster and add another to SRKH's collection.
ReplyDeleteThis movie is what a movie should be a true entertainer , instead of making a movie on gangs and terror and giving all kinds of silly ideas to people and helping in their plans. This movie simply puts a calming smile on your face when you walk out. The start is funny and the end is funny but with a sweet touch. If india fails to commend this movie they need to review the word "entertainment" and really go for only ramu's movies I love this movie and really think that you will enjoy it too. Please do not listen to mindless people as there as lots of people who believe DDLJ should have been a flop.. well anyway go in with a bunch of griends or your girl friend and have a blast. SRKH rocks.
