Sunny Deol gains his Hero identity
Samir Karnik's Heroes has opened to good reviews and encouraging collections and the two actors who are a highlight of the film happen to be Salman Khan and Sunny Deol. Interestingly director Karnik chose to cast Salman Khan in the role of a Sikh and Sunny Deol who has played a Sardar with aplomb in films like Border and Gadar comes in a clean-shaven look. The characterizations have worked for both but more importantly for Sunny Deol, since he sees success after a long time.
The last time that Sunny Deol tasted success was with Apne in which he had father Dharmendra and brother Bobby Deol for company. Even since then there was no release of Sunny except for a forgettable cameo in Kaafila .
Sunny was expecting a lot from his production Chamku starring brother Bobby Deol in the lead. However the film did not meet the audience's expectations. Citing reasons that age has caught up with the actor, the media was just about to reject Sunny Deol. At this point of time his film Heroes released and silenced his detractors.
Sunny did give his best shot to the film. Despite playing a crippled character in the film, he did not disappoint his fans who expect mind-blowing action from him. There was an extensive action sequence where he minces meat of the villains through his hands, while still being on the wheel chair. But the conviction with which he delivers punches makes you believe that this handicap was much over his mental strength in the film.
Sunny films rule supreme in the North territories of Punjab and Delhi and Heroes has broken records in his hometown. The film has enjoyed the biggest pre-Diwali opening, releasing to packed cinemas in northern India. With fantastic collections pouring in across regions - 80-85% collections in multiplexes and 65% in single screens in UP, Punjab and Delhi, 80-85% single screens in Maharashtra and 80% in Gujarat and similar figures coming in from other regions, audience reactions have been very promising.
This is a clear indication that Sunny still has a lot of spunk in him and can defy age anytime. Currently he is all geared up to revive his production outfit Vijeta Films with vigour as he is adding finishing touches to his film The Man which he co-directs with Neeraj Pathak.
From Heroes to The Man , we surely hope to see the best of Sunny days.
