The Khan alignment

The Khan alignment

It's an alignment of stars never seen in the Bollywood sky before. Three blockbusters starring the three biggest Khans - Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman - will release within 34 days of each other over this month and the next.

The first charge will be from Salman, the hero of Subhash Ghai's Yuvvraaj. Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor and Zayed Khan are his co-stars.

Distributor Ashtvinayak will flood the country with 900 prints and 500 digital prints. Eros International will distribute it overseas.

Next out, on December 12, is Shah Rukh Khan's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. And coming to you as a Christmas day gift is Aamir Khan's Gajini.

A source says, SRK was also planning to release his own production Billo Barber this month, but postponed it on a request from Ghai. "Yuvvraaj is a big film for Mukta Arts.

Subhaji asked Shah Rukh, could he change the date?" the source adds. Since releasing Billo Barber any later would have meant a clash with Rab Ne and #8230; Shah Rukh pushed its release to next year.

Shah Rukh thinks this has been good policy. "Every film should be given a chance of getting maximum screen space.

I strongly believe that no two big films should open on the same Friday," he says. Cinemas see no problem taking in so many films, should they run for several weeks.

"More the merrier," says Ranjan Singh of PVR Cinemas. "We have enough screens for all of them.

" Deepak Saluja of Fun Cinemas adds, "After Diwali, it has been rush time at the box office. The hype would be the biggest with these three films.

" According to an industry analyst, Rs 150 crore is riding on these three. Studio 18 had bought the rights of Gajini for Rs 90 crore.

Yuvvraaj was made on a budget of about Rs 50 crore. While Rab Ne and #8230; is not that big budget-wise, "going by SRK's market value on the basis of Om Shanti Om, which took Rs 82 crore net, the expectations are huge", says analyst Taran Adarsh.

May the best Khan win.
