21 Battle of Saragarhi - From Ashes to Glory (planned)
Sanjay Dutt Productions and G S Entertainment will produce a periodfilm based on the battle of Saragarhi which was fought during the
Tirah Campaign on 12 September 1897 between 21 Sikhs of a Sikh
Regiment of British India, defending an army post, and 10,000 Afghan
and Orakzai tribesmen in a last stand; all the Sikh soldiers fell.
Rohit Jugraj will direct the film; Sanjay as the lead actor will play
Havildar Ishar Singh, who led the Sikh onslaught in that battle. Bunty
Walia from G S Entertainment, who is a Sikh, had been dreaming of
making a film on this event for a long time; when Rohit Jugraj
appraoched him with the same idea, they talked to Sanjay about it as
they wanted him to play the Sikh leader. Sanjay liked the story and
was even wiling to produce the film. It will have many special
effects, and a lot of technicians from abroad are on board, some of
them having assisted on the Hollywood film 300; Rohit is in talks with
special effects supervisor Chris Watts and cinematographer Christopher
Doyle. With a budget is estimated to be around Rs 200 crore (Bunty:
"We have to pay 21 actors for this film!") this might become one of
Hindi Cinema's most expensive films. The shooting will be in Morocco
as the topography of Morocco is quite similar to the topography of the
North West Province where the Battle of Saragarhi took place. As a lot
of pre-production is required, it will take some time before shooting
starts.
