Slumdog Millionaire wins People's Choice Award at Toronto

September 14, 2008 (Sawf News) - Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire starring Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan picked up The People Choice Award at Toronto Film Festival on Saturday, September 13.

The film was voted the best by festival audiences.

The People Choice Award is often a precursor to an Oscar nomination.

Films that have won the award in the past include Chariots of Fire, American Beauty, Life is Beautiful and Hotel Rawanda.

The comedy drama directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Sunshine) tells the story of an illiterate Indian youngster who becomes a contestant on a local version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in order to re-establish contact with the girl he loves, who is an ardent fan of the show.

The film, based on the bestselling novel Q and A by Vikas Swarup, was shot on location in Mumbai with British newcomer Dev Patel playing the lead role and Anil Kapoor the gameshow host.

Fox Searchlight and Warner Bros. have teamed up to distribute the film.

The film is also to be screened at the London Film Festival that starts on October 15 and ends on October 30.

It is due for release in India on November 28.
