Box Office : Sajjanpur appeals, Sensex drops

Box Office : Sajjanpur appeals, Sensex drops

All the three releases of this week were primarily comedy films without a slapstick treatment. Moreover two of them (Hulla and Saas Bahu and Sensex) had a share market backdrop though not similar stories in any way. Only Welcome to Sajjanpur managed to survive for Shyam Benegal’s simple storytelling that comes as a breather in times of formulaic films. Also the film was more aggressively marketed by UTV Spotboy as compared to the other releases and with positive reviews, the slow-starter fared a decent weekend.

Warner Brothers’ maiden venture in India Saas Bahu and Sensex had Farooque Sheikh returning to films after a decade. But with a cliched love-triangle thrown in and a predictable climax, the feel-good film ended up like a regular fare despite the novel sensex setup.

Hulla was the weakest link amongst the week’s humour tales. The start was interesting but the humour was exasperatingly repeated in the second half and the end was a huge disappointment. Despite the small-budget and modest setting, the content of Hulla was awfully weak to recreate a Bheja Fry success-story. This one failed to even make it to the Top-5 list of the week.

With the shradh period having started, the superstitious Bollywood industry is playing it safe and so one wouldn’t see big movies releasing till the end of shradh by September 29.

Mirchi Movies is daring to release Hari Puttar on September 26 and Shemaroo is coming up with Raffoo Chakkar. While the former is being strongly promoted, not many are even aware of the title and release of the latter. Again the common element between both releases is the comedy genre. Let’s see which one manages to actually make you laugh.
