Aamir Khan was moved to tears
He made everyone cry with his evocative directorial debut Taare Zameen Par . But Aamir Khan was himself moist-eyed when felicitated for the film in Chennai on Tuesday.
Aamir usually doesn’t accept awards but he made an exception for the 11th Gollapudi Srinivas Award function where he was given the Best Debut Director award and a winning prize money of 1.5 lakh rupees. Also present at the function were director Vidhu Vinod Chopra , actor Anupam Kher , lyricist Prasoon Joshi and director A Murugadoss.
But it was an impassioned speech by K. Balachander , the eminent Tamil director, that had Aamir in tears.
Here’s an excerpt from Balachander’s speech.
“I quote Charlie Chaplin, who once said life laughs at you when you’re sad and smiles at you when you’re happy. But life salutes you when you make others happy. This movie made me cry but still made me happy. I salute you Aamir. Indian cinema is now in safe hands,” the director had said.
Hearing these sincere words of praise from none other than the doyen of Tamil cinema made Aamir emotional and moist-eyed.
The actor-director was so moved that he asked to take the written speech of Balachander and keep it with him as a souvenir.
Aamir said one day when he’s old, he would read the speech to his grandchildren.
As for the prize money, Aamir gladly gifted it to MGR Film Institute in Chennai.
