Bollywood superstar and filmmaker Aamir Khan has taken out some time from his busy schedule to do some social work.

Aamir has not only come out in support for animal welfare, but has also been chosen as the brand ambassador for Incredible India's Atithi Devo Bhava campaign for the Union Tourism Ministry.

Currently embroiled in a legal wrangle for alleged violation of animal rights during shooting of his movie Lagaan , Aamir not only came out in support for animal welfare but also shared the stage with well-known animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi.

"I believe all life is one whether it is animals or plants. Whether for luxury or entertainment it would be wrong to trouble the animals," said Aamir, who was in the capital New Delhi Friday to support the endeavors of People for Animals (PFA) an NGO.

Aamir who is known to voice his concerns about different social issues said, "What PFA is doing is something we all ought to support and I'm happy to be here."

Aamir was accused of filming a Chinkara deer, a Schedule I animal under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, for commercial purposes without taking due permission, during the shooting of the movie 'Lagaan', for which most of the shooting was held in Kutch in 2000.

He alongwith his ex-wife Reena Dutta, the film's producer, director Ashutosh Gowarikar , executive director Srinivas Rao and photographer Ashok Mehta have all been named in this case.

However Aamir maintains that the Chinkara and the relevant scenes were created using computer graphics. The hearing for the case is still pending in the Gujarat High Court.

On being appointed as the brand ambassador for Incredible India's Atithi Devo Bhava campaign, Aamir said, "I am very happy to be part of the Incredible India campaign."

The decision to appoint Aamir as the brand ambassador for the campaign was taken on Friday after the meeting between Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni and Aamir.

Aamir will promote the ministry's efforts both for domestic and foreign tourists through ad campaigns in print and electronic media to increase social awareness about the needs of the tourists, specially women visitors.

“The Incredible India campaign is a beautiful campaign and we have to take it further for our country,” he said.

There will be road shows and public events involving Aamir besides ad campaigns and the actor will not take any fee for the campaign.

"I am not charging any fee and I am doing it as part of my social responsibility," he said.

Expressing her happiness over the association of Aamir with the ministry, Soni said the mass appeal of the actor will further boost its efforts to make people aware about the safety and security of tourists, hygiene, sanitation and vandalisation of historical monuments.
