10 Action Flicks You Can't Miss
Star Trek
(May 8)
Who's in It? Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana
What's the Deal? The prequel to the original series chronicles the early days of the friendship between James T. Kirk (Pine) and Spock (Quinto) and the first outer space mission of the USS Enterprise. J.J. Abrams' epic pre-telling is as much of an homage to the legendary series as it is an invitation for new fans to join the Trekkie universe.
Why It's a Must: Abrams equals box-office gold, and we have waited a long, long time to see this movie. Will all the secrecy pay off? In dollars, we know it will.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
(June 24)
Who’s in It? Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel
What’s the Deal? In this second epic battle for the universe, the Decepticon forces return to Earth to take Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) prisoner, after he learns the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers.
Why It’s a Must: Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the writers of Star Trek, are the masterminds behind this screenplay as well. And who would want to miss the robots getting down to the Pussycat Dolls’ “Jai Ho”?
Terminator Salvation
(May 21)
Who’s in It? Christian Bale, Bryce Dallas Howard
What’s the Deal? This post-apocalyptic sequel to the previous Terminators, set in 2018, follows John Connor (Bale) as he leads the human resistance against Skynet. After Skynet destroys much of humanity, Connor struggles to keep the machines from finishing the job.
Why It’s a Must: As if Bale’s on-set rant that was captured on tape isn’t reason enough to be curious, seeing if the ending remained unspoiled should be interesting.
G.I. Joe
(August 7)
Who’s in It? Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller
What’s the Deal? Set ten years from now, an elite military unit consisting of special operatives known as G.I. Joe takes on the evil Cobra organization led by a notorious arms dealer.
Why It’s a Must: If this movie doesn’t have a plotline simple enough for a three-year-old to follow, we would be genuinely surprised. Now, if your three-year-old is into senseless violence and gratuitous cameos, it’s a win-win situation.
Land of the Lost
(June 5)
Who’s in It? Will Ferrell, Anna Friel, Danny McBride, Jorma Taccone
What’s the Deal? Pompous paleontologist Rick Marshall (Ferrell) gets sucked into a space-time vortex alongside his research assistant (Friel) and a redneck survivalist (McBride). In a world full of dinosaurs and other fantastic creatures, their only ally is a primate named Chaka (Taccone). But how will they make it back home alive? And will this discovery of an alternate universe redeem our disgraced hero?
Why It’s a Must: Because it’s Will Ferrell. In the hands of any other actor, this movie could easily be a disaster.
Public Enemies
(July 1)
Who’s in It? Billy Crudup, Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard
What’s the Deal? It’s the true story of Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Depp), the charismatic criminal whose lightning raids and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to the American public and made him the top target for the FBI and its top agent Melvin Purvis’ (Bale).
Why It’s a Must: Despite being set in the 1930s, the film’s themes could not be more current. And although the movie hasn’t even premiered, there is already Oscar buzz for Depp.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
(July 17)
Who’s in It? Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint
What’s the Deal? In the sixth Harry Potter installment, our three heroes work on unlocking Lord Voldemort’s defenses as the evil wizard continues his rise to power.
Why It’s a Must: The Harry Potter franchise has never disappointed, and there is no reason to believe Half-Blood Prince won’t live up to its royal lineage. Plus, hello, the infamous death of you-know-who …
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
(May 1)
Who’s in It? Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber
What’s the Deal? In the prequel to the X-Men trilogy, we visit a darker time in Wolverine’s life as he seeks revenge against his half- brother Victor Creed/ Sabretooth (Schreiber) for the death of his girlfriend, and ultimately ends up having his skeleton bonded with the indestructible metal adamantium.
Why It’s a Must: Explosions, superheroes and a shirtless Jackman — what more can you ask for in a summer blockbuster?
Angels and Demons
(May 15)
Who’s in It? Tom Hanks, Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgard
What’s the Deal? When Harvard symbolist Robert Langdon (Hanks) is called to help solve the murder of a physicist, he discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati, who are set to destroy the Vatican City. When Langdon learns that the clock is ticking on an unstoppable Illuminati time bomb, he embarks on an adventure through Rome’s sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs and deserted cathedrals -- following the trail of ancient symbols that mark the Vatican's only hope for survival.
Why It’s a Must: If you read, saw and analyzed The Da Vinci Code to death, this sequel will have you mulling over the myths and legends that the Catholic church call “malicious.”
Taking of Pelham 123
(June 12)
Who’s in It? Denzel Washington, John Travolta
What’s the Deal? In the remake of the 1970s film, armed men led by former mercenary Bernard Ryder (Travolta) hijack a New York City subway train, holding the passengers hostage in return for a ransom. Subway dispatcher Zachary Garber (Washington) tries to negotiate with the hijackers and offers his surrender to Ryder in exchange for the hostages aboard the train.
Why It’s a Must: Previous collaborations between director Tony Scott and Washington have been consistently entertaining, and Travolta gets to redeem himself as a bad guy – and we can forget the disastrous Swordfish.
Summer 2009: The Best of the Rest
1. Bruno
Who's in It? Sacha Baron Cohen
What's the Deal? The mock title of the movie was "Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt." Need we say more?
Why It's a Must: If you were a fan of the Ali G Show you already know Bruno, the flamboyant fashionista. Add to that the success of Borat, and you've got a sure hit on your hands. (July 10)
2. Funny People
Who's in It? Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann
What's the Deal? Sandler plays a dying comedian who, in search for true friendship, takes a green performer (Rogen) under his wing.
Why It's a Must: Judd Apatow and Adam Sandler joining forces? It sounds so funny — in spite of the death angle — that it's almost too good to be true. (July 31)
3. Inglorious Basterds
Who's in It? Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, BJ Novak
What's the Deal? In this spaghetti western set in Nazi-occupied France, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are sent to brutally kill Nazis in targeted acts of retribution. They eventually cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who has witnessed the execution of her family by Nazis and is working on a revenge plan of her own.
Why It's a Must: After eight or so years, Quentin Tarantino has finally completed his Dirty Dozen-meets-The Guns of Navarone — and cast Mike Myers as a military mastermind. Unmissable. (Aug. 21)
4. Up
Who's in It? Ed Asner (voice), Christopher Plummer (voice), John Ratzenberger (voice)
What's the Deal? Grumpy former balloon salesman, Carl (Asner), sets out to abandon his dreary world by tying thousands of balloons to his home. But right after lift-off, he realizes he unknowingly took a chubby eight-year-old "wilderness explorer" with him. Together, they embark on an adventure to South America, forming an unlikely friendship in the process.
Why It's a Must: Pixar should probably build more shelves for the awards they'll pick up next year. After 22 Academy Awards, 4 Golden Globes, and 3 Grammys, the bar is set high, and it looks like this movie will live "up" to those standards. (May 29)
5. The Brothers Bloom
Who's in It? Mark Ruffalo, Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody
What's the Deal? The best con men in the world, the Bloom brothers (Ruffalo and Brody), decide to take on one last job — swindling a beautiful and eccentric heiress, and in the process ending up on a romantic adventure around the world.
Why It's a Must: The whimsical movie that was supposed to open in January has already received rave reviews. This is the one to see. (May 29)
6. Year One
Who's in It? Jack Black, Michael Cera, Olivia Wilde
What's the Deal? In this comedy set in ancient times, a couple of lazy hunters (Black and Cera) are banished from their primitive village, setting them off on an epic journey through the stories of the Bible.
Why It's a Must: Judd Apatow plus Jack Black apparently equals Monty Python-like hilarity. It could be the new holy grail of comedy. (June 19)
7. Departures
Who's in It? Masahiro Motoki, Tsutomu Yamazaki, Ryoko Hirosue
What's the Deal? Professional cellist Daigo Kobayashi (Motoki) finds himself without a job and decides to move back to his old hometown with his wife to start over. He answers a classified ad entitled "Departures," thinking it is a travel agency but discovers it is for a funeral parlor looking for a professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial. While the people around him don't approve of his job, Daigo, um, kind of likes it — and takes pride in it. It's through the death of others that he discovers the joys of life — and we get to witness the beautiful journey.
Why it's a Must: It won this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (it beat out both predicted shoo-ins, Waltz With Bashir and The Class) and 29 other awards. All those people couldn't be wrong. Thank God for a U.S. release!
8. Julie and Julia
Who's in It? Amy Adams, Meryl Streep
What's the Deal? Julie Powell is a bored temp secretary who decides to cook and blog her way through Julia Child's classic cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, preparing 524 recipes in one year. The movie also follows Child's life based on her memoir My Life in France.
Why It's a Must: We can't wait to see how the two stories intertwine with the help of Streep and Adams. In fact, we're drooling at the thought of these women's culinary journeys. (Aug. 7)
9. (500) Days of Summer
Who's in It? Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Minka Kelly
What's the Deal? Tom (Gordon-Levitt) falls head over heals in love with a woman named Summer (Deschanel) who doesn't believe true love exists. Over a span of 500 days, we follow this quirky romance from Tom's perspective, going from ecstatic giddiness one moment to crippling depression the next.
Why It's a Must: According to Sundance testimonials, Summer is a fresh and thought-provoking take on the rom-com, that doesn't subscribe to clichés. (July 17)
10. Shorts
Who's in It? William H. Macy, Leslie Mann, Jon Cryer, James Spader
What's the Deal? In a suburb where all houses look the same and all denizens are employed by BLACK BOX Unlimited Worldwide Industries Incorporated, 11-year-old Toe Thompson finds a mysterious rainbow-colored rock that grants wishes to anyone who holds it. Before long, wishes-gone-wrong are causing mayhem around every corner. Now Toe must discover that what you wish for is not always what you want.
Why It's a Must: The amazing cast alone should get audiences excited, and gore king Robert Rodriguez is surprisingly good at making movies without blood spatter. (Aug. 7)
