Slumdog Millionaire bagged 8 Oscar

Slumdog Millionaire wins 8 Oscars, 2 for Rahman

Slumdog Millionaire, nominated for 10 Oscars, bagged 8 Oscar statuettes and A R Rahman won 2 Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ‘Jai Ho’. Indian sound technician Resul Pookutty also bagged an Oscar for the Best Sound Mixing for Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire bagged 8 Oscar statuettes today, February 23, at the 81st Annual Academy Awards, including the Best Film, Best Director and the Best Original Score. Out of the 8 Oscars that Slumdog won, A R Rahman created history by winning 2 Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for ‘Jai Ho’ along with renowned lyrist Gulzar.

In his acceptance speech after bagging the awards for the Best Original Score Category, Rahman said, “Before coming here I was excited and terrified. The last time I felt that way was when I was getting married.”

“There is a Hindi dialogue 'mere pass ma hai', which means even if I have got nothing I have my mother here. I want to thank her for coming all the way to support me," the 43-year-old musician said. Rahman was again on the dais to accept the Oscar for the best Original Song for the number “Jai ho”, sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Mahalaxmi Iyer.

Indian sound technician Resul Pookutty, along with his colleagues Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke, won the Oscar in the Best Sound Mixing category for the same film. Pookutty was pitted against tough competition from ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘WALL-E’ and ‘Wanted’.

Slumdog Millionaire, however, missed out in the Best Sound Editing category to ‘The Dark Knight. The film also won awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and the Best Film Editing.

Pookutty, recently won a BAFTA and Cinema Audio Society (CAS) awards for best sound mixing. He is the first Indian to win the CAS award.

Slumdog Millionaire won the Best Film award, ahead of ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, ‘Frost/Nixon’, ‘Milk’ and ‘The Reader’ in the Best Picture category.

Danny Boyle also bagged the Best Director award for Slumdog Millionaire. British scriptwriter Simon Beaufoy brought in the first of the 7 Oscars for the film in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for Slumdog Millionaire, based on Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup's novel ‘Q and A’. Slumdog Millionaire was nominated for 10 Oscars.

Anthony Dod Mantle also won the Oscar in the Best Cinematography category for the film Slumdog Millionare. "It is a tremendous honour. I thank Vikas Swarup, without him 'Slumdog' would not have happened," said Beaufoy while accepting the golden statuette.

'Smile Pinki', another Oscar entry with an Indian connection, won the trophy in Documentary (Short) category. "The Final Inch" - Irene Tylor Brodsky's 38-minute documentary that captures the struggle of polio field workers as they travel from village to village to administer polio drops under the polio eradication programme of India was also nominated in the same category.

British actress Kate Winslet won the Best Actress honours for her role in the Nazi prison drama "The Reader". Winslet was Oscar-nominated five times in the past 13 years but had always returned home empty-handed. Winslet piped Oscar veteran Meryl Streep for her role in ‘Doubt’, Anne Hathaway in ‘Rachel Getting Married’, Angelina Jolie in ‘The Changeling’ and Melissa Leo in ‘Frozen River’. Streep holds the record for being the highest nominated actress with 15 nominations and two awards.

In the Best Actor category, Sean Penn bagged the Academy for his role as a gay politician in ‘Milk’. Penn was up against the comeback star Mickey Rourke in ‘The Wrestler’, Brad Pitt in ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, Richard Jenkins in ‘The Visitor’ and Frank Langella in "Frost/Nixon".
