Bollywood Box Office Report May 2008

Bollywood Box Office Report May 2008

The coming Friday will see the release of Sikandar Kher's directorial debut venture, WOODSTOCK VILLA and the Jimmy Shergill starrer, HASTEY HASTEY. Given the promotion, the suspense angle and also the good promotion, Sanjay Gupta's WOODSTOCK VILLA looks the front runner but the Rohit Batra written HASTEY HASTEY may just impress in regions that patronize comedy, thanks to the good punch lines.

From the last Friday's releases, Mithun Chakraborthy's DON MUTHU SWAMI and Shashi Ranjan's DHOOM DADAKKA both had a poor to weak opening

and are likely to go largely unnoticed. The third release of the week, Shemaroo Entertainment's animated GHATOTHKACH had a dull to weak start and will turn out to be a disappointing fare at the ticket window, though it will score once the home video is released.

Vishesh Films' JANNAT has done very well and is sure to fetch overflow from the second week itself. The Kunal Deshmukh directed film collected 2.40 crores from Bombay, 95 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.50 lakhs from Baroda, 2.15 lakhs from Palanpur, 2.85 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 1.50 lakhs from Deesa, 10.65 lakhs from Rajkot, 4.50 lakhs from Jamnagar, 5.70 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.50 lakhs from Porbandar, 1.10 lakhs from Surendranagar, 1 lakh from Junagarh, 1.20 lakhs from Morbi, 1.50 lakhs from Bhuj, 2.90 lakhs from Gandhidham, 1.15 lakhs from Adipur, 13.50 lakhs from Pune, 2 lakhs from Solapur, 2.25 lakhs from Sangli, 6.20 lakhs from Nasik, 1.60 crores from Delhi, 16.50 lakhs from Noida, 14.20 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 14.15 lakhs from Kanpur, 19.20 lakhs from Lucknow, 6 lakhs from Agra, 1.85 lakhs from Allahabad, 3.95 lakhs from Meerut, 5.75 lakhs from Aligarh, 2.20 lakhs from Amritsar, 19.75 lakhs Gurgaon, 14.75 lakhs from Faridabad, 2.05 lakhs from Panipat, 60.15 lakhs

During the first week, the below 10 crore JANNAT has netted an excellent (for its selling price) 15.75 crores from India. The Emraan Hashmi and Sonal Chauhan starrer is on way to a big success. JANNAT had also performed reasonably well in the UK, for an Emraan Hashmi starrer, grossing $206,336 so far

Ravi Chopra's Vivek Sharma directed BHOOTHNATH is steady at many places but drops at others. Checking out the numbers the Amitabh Bachchan starrer collected 1.10 crores from Bombay, 33.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.05 lakhs from Baroda, 1 lakh from Himmatnagar and Valsad, 1.10 lakhs from Patan, 4.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 2 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1.60 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.15 lakhs from Gandhidham, 6.15 lakhs from Pune, 1 lakh from Sangli and Akola, 4 lakhs from Nasik, 75 lakhs from Delhi city, 11.25 lakhs from Noida, 6.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 5.20 lakhs from Kanpur, 12 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.60 lakhs from Agra, 1.35 lakhs from Meerut, 1.30 lakhs from Morabad, 1.50 lakhs from Panipat, 2.60 lakhs from Guwahati, 6.30 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.05 lakhs from Durg and Dhule, 3 lakhs from Jaipur, 1.25 lakhs from Bikaner 12 lakhs from Hyderabad and 1.90 lakhs from Mangalore. With another 6.75 crores during its latest outing, BHOOTHNATH has netted a decent 21.25 crores in two weeks from India. The Amitabh Bachchan, Juhi Chawla, Aman Siddiqui and Shah Rukh Khan (special appearance) starrer is now a below average to average fare in India. And that is a creditable effort indeed! Unfortunately, BHOOTHNATH has failed to impress the Overseas with ordinary grosses of $346,142 and $476,032 from UK and US respectively.

Meanwhile Yash Raj's Vijay Krishna Acharya directed multi-starrer, TASHAN, takes another big fall, after a somewhat stable third week! The film collected 10.50 lakhs from Bombay, 1.85 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.05 lakhs from Patan, 4.50 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.60 lakhs from Noida, 1.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.85 lakhs from Kanpur, 2.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.70 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1 lakh each from Faridabad and Aurangabad and 1.70 lakhs from Hyderabad. Adding another 85 lakhs during its fourth week, TASHAN has so far netted in excess of 30 crores from India. The Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer though remains in a flop category. TASHAN has also failed in the Overseas, with poor grosses of $696,133 from UK and $457,380 from US.
